Give Hope to the Homeless

depressed homeless man

Homeless person out on the street

Little to eat

No good clothes to wear

Asks, “Does anyone care?”

I see the penetrating sadness in their eyes

Dying fragments of hope

Trying their best to cope

Begging for a meal

Sometimes having to steal

Caught in poverty’s defeating trap

Tossed from one agency to another

Told it’s their problem

Blame the victim

Are we not to treat everyone as our brother?

No place to lay their weary head

Freezing

Frost-bitten

Depressed

Downtrodden

Hated

Shelters full

Abandoned

Abused

Alone

Arrested

Why?

For living among the middle class, well to do

Go away!

There is no help here for you!

Can’t have a shelter in our neighbourhood

Property values will go down

Refuse of society

Moral defects

Humankind’s rejects

But who are any of us to judge them?

We who have a home and nutritious food don’t live their life

Dumpster diving for food

Willing to eat rotting meat

Some selling their bodies to survive

Some addicted to drugs and/or alcohol

Solutions seem so few

But if we all did something to help it would make a difference

Become a member of homeless advocacy group

Ask your political representatives to help address the problem

Train to be a social worker or in helping professions

Offer time to mentor the poor

Fundraise to help put the poor in your community or church through university

Offer work internships

Join a political party addressing issue of homelessness

The homeless would feel we care

Their burdens we do share

Our hope is they have a happier life

One not so full of daily strife

Freed from their homelessness

To hope again

To see light in their darkness

To believe in a brighter tomorrow

To be the ones who help others in need

These are the marks of a caring society indeed
