Surfing to St. James the Elder Theological Seminary

Many say that the internet is a waste of time. If I could have a few minutes of your most valuable time, I would like to share with you how for me it is not. I was looking for an affordable seminary for further graduate training in counseling and theology. My wife, Karen, tells people I am Mr. Research. She tells people if you want to find information if my husband can’t find it, it ilkely can’t be found. While I believe there are others who are superior to me in this, it is this skill I thank God for that led me to St. James the Elder Theological Seminary.

I researched many graduate schools. My heart and my mind kept coming back to St. James the Elder Theological Seminary.

I had a wonderful talk with Dr. Heyward Ewart as he heard me share the dreams I believe God put in my heart of training to be a psychotherpaist and a minister. I really felt listened to and understood as I found myself sharing the memories of my child and adult abuse from my schizophrenic father. He opened up to me about how his father abused him. You can read more about that in his book Soul Rape: Recovering Personhood After Abuse.

Dr. Ewart encouraged me how God could use me as one of His counselors. He said I am sensitive to others because of the emotional and physical abuse I experienced. He told me that unlike any other graduate program that when I graduated I would be a specialist in abuse recovery. My journey would be the story of an overcomer helping others who are abused have their own story of victory from the defeating lies of their abuse.

Dr. Ewart, who I  affectionately call Father Paul, has always made time for me in his busy schedule. When I call for mentoring or guidance in life, spiritual formation or my studies, he speaks to me showing I am the only one on his mind. That is a gift of his heart I cherish. He has become not just my teacher, but more importantly one of my most valued friends.
I am on an exciting journey of discovering more about who I really am! I am not the lies that my father and others sought for me to believe. I am a caring man, who has much to give others. God has me here to be a healer of wounded lives. I am on a journey of forgiving all those who abused me and told me I would be a failure. I am called to be a servant to suffering humanity whether the individual is a millionaire on Wall Street or the poorest of the poor. That is my callling not for the glory of Kevin Osborne, but for my Lord, who I love with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength.

The tuition for the M.A.-Ph.D program in Clinical Christian Counseling is $9,000 U.S. Karen and I are students in the same program. We are taking additional graduate divinity studies at Trinity College in the University of Toronto.

Do you feel a call to your heart to study at St. James the Elder Theological Seminary? Perhaps, you are thinking that you will have trouble meeting deadlines for assignments. One of the many great things about the training we are taking is that it is self-paced. We don’t have to stress over handling multiple courses. We study one module at a time doing the readings or listening to teaching podcasts. There are exams and essays that you do from the comfort of your own home, office or if you are using wifi. Your seminary travels with you wherever you go. You can study in your pyjamas. Just make sure your web cam isn’t on:)

There is no filler work. It is a streamlined practical program of instruction where you study and apply what you learn as you go along through supervised guidance from Dr. Ewart and his staff. After completing our M.A. we will have 1,000 hours of supervised counseling practice. Father Paul is helping us set up our counseling practice and supervise us as we see people needing help.

It would interest the veterans out there or others called to chaplaincy like me, that when you graduate you qualify to become a chaplain with the U.S. Veterans Adminstration. This particularly interests me because in World War 1 at age 17 my grandafther was Private First Class Sanford Dobson in the infantry division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the forerunner to the Canadian Armed Forces.  I feel called to give back in honor of my grandfather’s memory to those who have sacrificed so much for their country.
