Who wants to be a motivational mosquito?

In looking for a quote that would be remembered about how each of us can make a difference in the lives of others, this one moved me the most. It is a quotation that has a bite to it:)  For those of us of us who have been bitten by a mosquito the pain it inflicts lives on long after. I know. I have felt the perpetual aggravating itch of many mosquito bites. These small insects can really bug you! Small things can have a huge impact.

Most of us will not be asked to give a riveting motivational speech to thousands and perhaps millions of people like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He inspired us to believe that we can have the dream of a world where everyone is equal, where hate, poverty, indifference and injustice no longer exist. Many would say these are high ideals that will never come true. People who spend their lives doing the same ordinary things over and over again may think such lofty ideals have no impact in their lives. But Dr. King wouldn’t agree and Gandhi would say, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

We all can make a lasting influence on the lives we touch. Every day think of one thing you can do to be there for others. If you know someone who is sick go and visit that person. You may have been the only visit the individual received in months. Surprise a stranger in a restaurant by buying their meal. Have a fundraiser in your community or church by selling what you would have thrown out in spring cleaning. The money raised would help support local needs. Sponsor a child overseas so they get food and an education to escape poverty. Volunteer by becoming a Board Member for a non-profit organization. Give some of your time at a food bank.  Become a literacy tutor. Teach someone to cross-stitch. Sing a song to a person who needs to feel loved and valued. Start an inspirational blog. Offer to be a co-author for Mind’s Seat, the inspirational blog I am a co-author on. We need the inspiring thoughts of both youth and adults on Mind’s Seat.

Offer to be a co-author or guest author on my blog. I never intended my blog to be merely my thoughts on how we can be instruments of change in people’s lives and how we can change our communities by improving ourselves. I started it hoping to inspire you on how you can do this. This blog is not mine; it is yours. I am not dreaming individually for a better world. We are I hope believing together that such a thing can be an active reality.

Tell a joke or share a story from your life to uplift someone else. Mentor a teenager in danger of turning to a life of crime. Help get a hard-working person a job. Offer to play a game with your family or friends instead of watching TV. Buy groceries for a struggling individual or family who has fallen on hard times. Treat yourself to times of rest and relaxation so you will have the needed energy to encourage others. Have technology-free days away from your iPhone, tablet or lap top computer where you unplug from the noise of the world and get out enjoy the outdoors.

I have suggested only some of the many ways you can make a difference in the lives of others. I would be glad to read your thoughts with your own list of ideas on ways we can show acts of kindness. I will share your collective thoughts in a future piece.

Wake up each day with this guiding thought. I will do one thing today to help make the life of someone else better.

The most important thing we all can do is stop, and really listen to one person, just one person. The impact on that person will be far-reaching.

Thanks, Dalai Lama, for inspiring us to be motivational mosquitoes.
